Pomegranates Hold Great Potential

Men have been drinking pomegranate juice ever since research showed a potential protective benefit against prostate cancer. New research suggests women may want to follow suite. A recent study published in Cancer Prevention Research, evaluated pomegranate juice as a way of driving away and preventing breast cancer, has yielded promising results. As we have learned from previous studies, pomegranate juice is full of antioxidants.
Pomegranate seeds contain a chemical known as ellagic acid, which may help delay and even prevent the growth of cancer cells in breast tissue. Researchers wanted to see if compounds derived from the ellagic acid found in pomegranate had any effect on aromatase, which is an enzyme that promotes the growth of breast cancer. They studied ten different compounds derived from ellagic acid and found that one, urolithin B, has potential in the treatment and/or prevention of breast cancer.
Currently researchers are not suggesting that women swap out pomegranates for their current method of treatment, however they do say that adding a glass of pomegranate a day may not be such a bad idea.
