Smarter Sips

According to the Oceanic Society, between 4 and 12 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year. (That’s enough to cover every foot of coastline on the planet.) Luckily, there are little steps you can take to reduce this number — like using compostable straws.

Here’s what you need to know about this earth-conscious substitute.

  • They’re natural. The usual materials in compostable straws are cornstarch or paper, making them easy on the environment.
  • They’re affordable. Compostable straws won’t break the bank. They’re often priced competitively with their plastic counterparts.
  • They’re sturdy. Contrary to what some people think, compostable straws won’t disintegrate in drinks.
  • They’re easy. Compostable straws can be tossed into your compost bucket or pile — they break down into harmless, nutrient-rich compost that fertilizes the soil.
